- Seagate USB devices have the serial number printed on the external case. For otherse: Download and usage instructions for a small program that can detect and display the serial and model number of any Seagate USB drive connected to a computer. Installing a Seagate disk drive into an external device is one of the most popular types of storage.
To identify your drive, retrieve the model number, serial number and firmware revision without removing your drive. There are multiple methods:
1.Seagate DriveDetect.exe method (recommended)
When running Drive Detect you will see a screen like this. Look for the drives that are attached:
In the example above the Drive Name is the same as the Model: ST31500341AS, the serial number is 9VS00J20 and the firmware revision is SD1A.
2. Device Manager Method:
Use Microsoft Windows Device Manager to see the model numbers of your disk drive.
a) Choose Start | Run | type: devmgmt.msc
b) Click Ok.
c) Expand the Disk Drive branch to see the model numbers:

3. Seatools for Windows Method:
Download SeaTools for Windows which displays all of the required information.
4. Non-Seagate USB Devices with Seagate Drives Inside
Seagate USB devices have the serial number printed on the external case. For otherse:
Download and usage instructions for a small program that can detect and display the serial and model number of any Seagate USB drive connected to a computer.
Installing a Seagate disk drive into an external device is one of the most popular types of storage. USB storage is portable and easily recognized by the operating system.
However, sometimes it is difficult to read the specific Model and Serial Number information of the SATA disk drive in non-Seagate USB devices. All Seagate devices have the serial numbers printed on the external case itself.
The USB Drive List utility may be helpful displaying the drive information for non-Seagate devices. For example, this screen from a Do-It-Yourself USB kit shows one Seagate drive is detected with model, serial number and the current firmware revision on the drive. The USB Drive List utility supports many, but not all, USB chipsets.

I am trying to access the serial port of a Seagate Self Encrypted Drive ST320LT014 with firmware 0001DEM7 but the serial port appears to be disabled.
Please note I have tried with several similar drives and I get the same errors as described below, all drives are working fine and it makes no difference if they are encrypted or not. The serial port always seems to be disabled.
I would like to know if anyone could help and if you know of a way to enable the serial port on those drives (i.e.: a secret factory handshake? because the standard CTRL+z does not work)
The reason I want to access the serial port is because I want to see what is in memory of those SED HDD board. I read a few articles stating that with older encrypted drives (and not SED) it was possible to extract the passwords from the HDD board memory. I’d like to check if that’s the case for those SED drives. Obviously, if the serial port is disabled then those articles/technics may not apply!
I can connect to the serial port OK (through a USB to TTL with the correct Rx/Tx connection) but I am getting the following errors:
1. If the drive is only powered and there are no DATA cable connected, with any key I press I am getting: (00h) -Serial Port Not Ready
2. If the drive is powered on AND there is a data cable connected, with any key I press I am getting: (1Ah) -TCG Serial Port Disabled
I am no electronic guru, I tried to unscrew the drive board and look for some “transistor” but cannot find anything obvious nor do I really know what to look for!
So really, I am just wondering if there is a way to either re-enable that serial port, or other means to access that HDD board memory to see how the drive password is stored.
(when the drive is locked, you get a prompt for a password at boot).
Thanks!
